Hammer Horror

Throughout the 1950s, 60s, and 70s, Hammer Film Throughout the 1950s, 60s, and 70s, Hammer Film Productions became one of the biggest names in British horror. Their movies had a look all their own: foggy castles, rich gothic sets, bright red blood, and a more shocking edge than many earlier monster films. Movies like The Curse of Frankenstein, Dracula, and The Mummy helped bring classic Gothic horror back to life for a new generation of moviegoers.

Two actors are almost impossible to separate from Hammer Horror: Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing. Lee had the perfect screen presence for these films. He was tall, intense, and intimidating, which made him unforgettable as Count Dracula in Dracula, Dracula: Prince of Darkness, and Dracula Has Risen from the Grave. He also played the Creature in The Curse of Frankenstein and the Mummy in Hammer’s 1959 version of The Mummy, using his physical presence to make even silent or heavily made-up roles feel powerful.

Peter Cushing was just as important to Hammer’s success, often playing the sharp, determined figure opposite Lee’s monsters. He starred as Van Helsing in the Dracula films and gave Hammer’s Frankenstein series one of its most memorable characters with his version of Victor Frankenstein. Cushing brought intelligence, control, and intensity to roles that could have easily been one-note, and his performances helped give Hammer’s horror films their classy but unsettling tone.

Hammer’s original horror era began to fade in the 1970s, with To the Devil a Daughter often viewed as the last major film of that classic run. Released in 1976, it starred Christopher Lee and a young Nastassja Kinski and was based on a Dennis Wheatley novel. The studio would struggle in the years that followed, but Hammer eventually returned decades later with newer films, including Let Me In, the 2010 remake of the Swedish vampire film Let the Right One In.

There is also a fun connection between Hammer Horror and Star Wars. Peter Cushing played Grand Moff Tarkin in the original 1977 Star Wars, while Christopher Lee later appeared as Count Dooku in the prequel trilogy. Hammer and Star Wars are completely different worlds, but Lee and Cushing managed to leave their mark on both gothic horror and science fiction.

Star Wars The Black Series 40th Anniversary Legacy Pack

At least for the time being, Amazon has the "Star Wars The Black Series 40th Anniversary Legacy Pack" in stock for retail price.

This awesome set comes with a new version of Darth Vader and the backcard and display stand for 40th Anniversary figures. I found one at Best Buy recently. Hope anyone who is looking for one can get to it before the scalpers that jack up the prices on eBay.

More #RogueOne Figure Arrived!

A couple more Rogue One figures from Rogue Friday arrived this weekend.

Thanks to DrQuest for picking up a Star Wars Black Series Kylo Ren unmasked and for sending along a few extras! Two little catalogs: the "Star Wars Collections" from Empire Strikes Back, and the "Return Of The Jedi Collections."

I also received the preordered Jyn Erso. It arrived a week after it was released, so I don't think I'll be preordering from Toys R Us again. I've pre-ordered from Amazon in the past, and those items usually arrived very close to the street date.

eBay Arrival: POTF II Cantina Showdown

From the Star Wars The Power of the Force II line, the Cantina Showdown three pack arrived from an eBay purchase.

The set includes three action figures: Dr. Evazan (exclusive to this set), Ponda Baba, and Obi-Wan Kenobi!  The set also includes a base, the Catina floor, and cardboard background of the Cantina.

Caption on the back of the box:
On the run from Imperial stormtroopers, Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi and Luke Skywalker enter the seedy Mos Eisley Cantina in hopes of finding swift passage to the planet Alderaan. Inside, among the gallery of criminals are the murderous Dr. Evazan and the brutal Ponda Baba--both of whom are thirsty for a fight with Skywalker. Reaching for their blasters, the villains are suddenly cut off from Luke by the pulsating blaze of Obi-Wan's lightsaber! Will Obi-Wan triumph and save the Rebellion's only hope?

Kmart Exclusive Star Wars Black Series Sergeant Jyn Erso

Another Rogue Friday order has arrived, Kmart Exclusive Star Wars Black Series Sergeant Jyn Erso (Eadu).

One thing about this exclusive that I find interesting is the small accessory that is included in the package.  The small black cylinder appears to be a non-activated lightsaber.  I guess we will have to wait to see.

This was a ship to store order, and it was not packaged well within the box.  There were a few packing bubbles, but Jyn Erso's box has some scuff and scrapes.  There are three noticeable white spots, two on the front and one of the back.

It also arrived with a sizable crease down the right side of the back of the box, as pictured in the image below.

Mattel finally started producing Star Wars merchandise last year, with the introduction of the Hot Wheels line of character cars, and soon after, they introduced a series featuring iconic Star Wars vehicles.

I have complied a list of these starships or vehicles below.  I made this a checklist, so I will be sure to know which Hot Wheels Star Wars vehicles I need to complete my collection.  I thought that it might also be useful for others, so I posted it here.  I also included links to each of these vehicles on Amazon.  This list was originally complied on 12/11/15.

Entertainment Earth Exclusive Black Series Four Pack

I received my Entertainment Earth Exclusive Black Series Four Pack today. This is another nice addition to the Black Series Collection.  The Black Series has become my favorite line of Star Wars action figures, and I didn't want to miss these.  As pictured above, the set includes Sandtrooper Sergeant (Black Series Debut), Crimson Stormtrooper (Character Action Figure Debut), Lieutenant Oxixo (Black Series Debut), and R2-Q5 (Black Series Debut).

The only thing that stands out to me apart from the four figures themselves is the packaging seems to be a different quality from the other Black Series figures. The cardboard looks to have a more matte finish, and it is definitely a thicker stock of cardboard and there are noticeable ridges in the material.

I think this set should have been price lower than the Amazon exclusive Stormtrooper Four Pack which was sold by Amazon for $79.99.  The Amazon set was a more reasonable price point, and their set had a more interesting four pack packaging.  I was able to find this set on Amazon from a 3rd party seller cheaper than buying it directly from Entertainment Earth.

The Black Series Series One Wave One

Star Wars Black Series Wave 1 included Luke Skywalker, Darth Maul, Sandtrooper and R2-D2.

This has become my favorite Star Wars action figure line.  I collected as many of The Vintage Collection as I could find, but they were hard to track down.  I now have more of these six Inch figures than those.

Of the regular line, all the way through Force Awakens Wave 1, I'm only missing IG-88.  I'll be posting more photos daily. Jimmy's Toys

My Vintage Star Wars Toy Part 2

This shelf includes several favorite vintage pieces.  I loved the Dagobah Action Playset when I received one for Christmas, as a very young child.  I still have vivid memories of that Christmas, with that playset and Yoda.  I'm sure that I got lots of other toys, but those are the two that I remember from that year.

There a number of my vintage Kenner action figures on this shelf including: Yoda, two Luke Skywalker (Jedi Knight Outfit), Darth Vader, Wicket, Emperor Palpatine, Teebo, General Madine, Prune Face, two Luke Skywalker (X-Wing Pilot), Han Solo, Chewbacca, Lando Clarissan, R2-D2, C-3PO, Luke Skywalker (Bespin), Han Solo (Hoth Gear), Obi-wan Kenobi, Han Solo (Bespin), Cloud City Guard and Chief Chirpa.

This shelf also include the vintage Catapult, that I think is an Ewok weapon, the Vintage Collection Ewok Assault Catapult, and the Vintage Collection Droid Set (R5-D4, Death Star Droid & Power Droid) and Villain Set (Sand People, Boba Fett & Snaggletooth).

Also, behind the Dagobah Action Playset there is a vintage AST-5 Armored Sentinel Transport and a Original Trilogy Collection: Luke Skywalker (Grey Shirt).

My Vintage Star Wars Toy Part 1

I have several shelves of Star Wars toys in my office.  The top of shelf one is pictured below.  In this portion of the my collection, one of my vintage Millennium Falcons, my vintage Landspeeder, my vintage B-Wing and my Vintage Collection X-Wing Fighter, which was a Toys R Us exclusive.

I will be going through my collection and posting more photos soon.  Follow me on Twitter and Instagram
